About Clayton, GA - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Clayton, Georgia is the county seat of Rabun County. Back in the 18th century it was known as the Dividings, since it sat at the intersection of three Cherokee trails. Two of these trails are now the county's main roads: U.S. 76 and U.S. 441. The town incorporated as Claytonville in 1823, honoring local jurist-turned-congressman Judge Augustin S. Clayton, but later shortened the name to its present form. Today Clayton has about 2,000 residents.
Clayton is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains, at the foot of Black Rock Mountain. Its scenic location was used to film part of the Disney movie “Old Yeller” in 1957, and today the surrounding area is home to several summer programs. Camp Ramah Darom also hosts Jewish learning activities throughout the year, and Camp Rainey's offerings include such adventure activities as shooting, archery, climbing and rappelling. Clayton is also where the well-known “Foxfire” oral history book series got its start.
Clayton gets about twice the average amount of rainfall for the U.S., which keeps it green and lovely. Its elevation of nearly 2,000 feet helps it stay cool in the summer, but winters can get down below freezing. Snowfall isn't heavy, but Clayton does average about five inches of the white stuff per year. The surrounding Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest offers year-round recreation opportunities including horseback riding, camping, swimming, boating and hunting.
