Franklin, North Carolina is a town of nearly 4,000 residents in Macon County. It is located within the Nantahala National Forest, surrounded by waterfalls, hills and valleys. Franklin has been named as one of the state's Main Street towns, with its dedication to revitalizing its downtown area, and it is also an official Appalachian Trail Community due to its proximity to the trail and the local support given to hikers and to the trail itself.
Franklin bills itself as the "Gem Capital of The World,” and it gem mining is a favorite pastime of visitors to the area. You can dig your own gems at venues such as Mason's Ruby and Sapphire Mine, the Mason Mountain Mine, the Cherokee Ruby & Sapphire Mine and the Old Cardinal Gem Mine. The Franklin Gem & Mineral Museum, located in the old jail building across from Macon County Courthouse, houses a collection of gems and minerals from all over the world.
Franklin sees moderate rainfall throughout the year, with March being the wettest month. Summer temperatures top out in the mid-eighties, and winters seldom fall below the mid-twenties. The town offers special events throughout the year, including April Fool's Trail Days and the Airing of the Quilts in spring, the Franklin Folk Festival each summer, Pumpkinfest with its famous Pumpkin Roll in the fall and the annual Winter Wonderland holiday celebration.
