About Highlands, NC - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Highlands, North Carolina was founded in 1875 by two businessmen who drew lines on a map that connected Chicago with Savannah and New Orleans with New York. They decided to purchase land at the place where these two lines intersected, feeling that this central location was bound to become an important commercial center. While the town hasn't grown quite as they expected, with its population still under 1,000 residents as of the 2010 census, it did become well known as a golfing mecca with the establishment of the Highlands Country Club in the 1930s. Today the area boasts several more country clubs, including the Cullasaja Club and the Highlands Falls Country Club.
Highlands has a fairly high elevation, particularly for an east coast location, as it sits atop the Eastern Continental Divide some 4,000 feet above sea level. This gives it a much cooler climate than the surrounding area, with summer temperatures never climbing much higher than the high 70s and winter temperatures dipping into the low 20s. The elevation also leads to increased rainfall as well as snowfall averaging from two to three and a half inches per month during the winter. Recreation opportunities in the Highlands area include hiking, particularly around the numerous local waterfalls, and fishing at Harris Lake and Cliffside Lake.
